Our latest research article “The Industrial Metaverse: Towards a Research Agenda of its Sustainability Implications” has been recently published as one of three scientific articles in the ISM conference proceedings (Procedia Computer Science).

Based on a combined approach including a systematic literature review and expert interviews, this study sheds light on the novel technological paradigm of the Industrial Metaverse. More than just a virtualization of production environments, the use of this technology has new implications for all areas of sustainability.

Key findings in a nutshell:
️ The industrial metaverse impacts the economic, social and environmental dimensions:

  • In addition to increased productivity and minimized costs, the business model can expand to new business areas. However, only with high initial investments.
  • Risks can be avoided and inclusivity strengthened. Nevertheless, the demands on employees are changing and social interaction may be neglected.
  • Circularity approaches are being strengthened, emissions reduced and resource consumption minimized. However, large amounts of energy are required, and whether this can also be saved remains questionable.
