On September 20th 2022, Prof. Dr. Stefan Asenkerschbaumer, President of the Schmalenbach Gesellschaft and member of our Chair, warmly opened the Schmalenbach Conference 2022. After the opening, he hosted an exciting top-management panel discussion on “Risk and Resilience” – a topic of striking relevance in today’s uncertain times.

Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW AG, pointed out that a long-term strategy is necessary and no contradiction to a high-volatile environment. In addition to that, he confirmed the strategy of multiple drive technologies, which makes BMW more resilient.

Christian Klein, CEO of SAP SE, highlighted the importance of digitalization in this context. In particular, he mentioned how new, digital technologies like AI, Blockchain, and Machine Learning can help to reduce uncertainty.

Sarna Röser, designated CEO of the family business Röser GmbH & Co KG, stated that family-owned firms normally show a high degree of resilience. She warned that too much regulation may diminish entrepreneurial activities in Germany – a statement that all panel members agreed to.

In moderating several questions from the audience, Prof. Asenkerschbaumer ended this highly informative panel and summed up the main insights how to manage risk and build up resilience.
